Discipline Summaries

August 31, 2003

JAMES MARK MEIZLIK [#62116], 56, of Los Angeles was suspended for two years, stayed, placed on two years of probation and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year. The order took effect Aug. 31, 2003.

Meizlik stipulated to misconduct in two matters.

In both, a non-lawyer associate of Meizlik accepted clients and their fees. In the first matter, Meizlik received the complaint from the non-lawyer and reviewed it but took no action to defend the client. The suit ended in a default judgment against his client.

In the second, Meizlik drafted an order to show cause and had a non-lawyer prepare and finalize documents for the client's signature. The non-lawyer then filed a petition for dissolution and a request for child and spousal support; he listed Meizlik as the attorney of record.

Meizlik stipulated that he failed to perform legal services competently, supervise his support staff or promptly refund unearned fees, and he improperly withdrew from employment.

Meizlik also was privately reproved in 2000 for failing to perform competently.

In mitigation, he cooperated with the bar's investigation and performed pro bono work for several disabled individuals.
