January 8, 2015 ROBERT J. FRY [#85791], 64, of Reno, Nev., was disbarred Jan. 8, 2015 and ordered to comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court. Fry was disbarred after pleading guilty in 2013 in the U.S. District Court of Nevada to one felony count of harboring an alien. In September 1986, the Department of Veterans Affairs assigned Fry to be fiduciary for a man who was deemed incompetent of handling his own affairs. In December 2004, the Department of Veterans Affairs replaced Fry as fiduciary, but he continued to be his friend and his payee for Social Security money. Meanwhile Fry met a woman from the Philippines who had overstayed her visa. Fry encouraged her to stay in the country, became romantically involved with her and rented her an apartment. In September 2008, Fry arranged a marriage between the woman and the man Fry had been fiduciary for so she could stay in the country. After the woman got a permanent residency card, authorities discovered it was a sham marriage, and she was later prosecuted. Fry received limited mitigation for having no prior record of discipline and entering into a pretrial stipulation with the State Bar. April 16, 2014 ROBERT J. FRY [#85791], 63, of Reno, Nev. was placed on interim suspension on April 16, 2014 following a conviction for encouraging an alien, to come, enter or reside in the U.S. in violation of the law. He was ordered to comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court. |
