WILLIAM HAROLD BROWNSTEIN [#84507], 50, of Los Angeles was suspended for one year, placed on two years of probation with an actual 90-day suspension, and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year. Credit shall be given for an interim suspension which began Nov. 24, 2001.

Brownstein pleaded guilty in 2001 to one count of submitting a false tax return for 1992, a felony involving moral turpitude. He underreported his earnings.

In mitigation, no clients were harmed and the misconduct was unrelated to the practice of law.

Brownstein had serious financial problems at the time due to a divorce and the decline of his bankruptcy practice. He cooperated with the bar's investigation, submitted numerous testimonials to his good character, has performed extensive pro bono work and had no discipline record in 15 years of practice.
