Discipline Summaries

May 27, 2016

BRUCE MARTIN GREENFIELD [#80122], 63, of Bel Air, was disbarred May 27, 2016 and ordered to comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court and make restitution.

A State Bar Court hearing judge initially recommended discipline that included a two-year actual suspension, but both Greenfield and the Office of Chief Trial Counsel appealed. A three-judge review panel recommended disbarment, finding that the hearing judge’s analysis did not “sufficiently address his pattern of employing abusive litigation strategies in bad faith, resulting in significant harm to the administration of justice.”

According to the panel, Greenfield persistently abused the bankruptcy process over five years, leading the courts to impose $87,000 in sanctions that he failed to pay or report to the State Bar. He filed multiple bankruptcies and removals for improper purposes, continued to file notices of removal to delay a court case even after he was warned by a bankruptcy court and filed baseless counter claims for indemnity in the Central District Bankruptcy Court.

Greenfield was ordered to pay $87,901.02 plus interest in restitution.

The review panel found no mitigating factors in Greenfield’s case and a number of aggravating factors, including a lack of insight into his wrongdoing and delaying and disrupting State Bar Court proceedings.
