March 25, 2006 LESLIE LAYTON HARTWELL [#66139], 57, of Hollywood was disbarred March 25, 2006, and was ordered to comply with rule 955. Hartwell did not meet the requirements of a 2005 disciplinary order that required him to comply with rule 955; he did not submit to the Supreme Court an affidavit stating that he notified his clients, opposing counsel and other pertinent parties of his suspension from practice. The underlying order stemmed from a probation violation. The original discipline was an interim suspension, imposed in 2001, for a 1999 no contest plea to felony vandalism.February 12, 2005 LESLIE LAYTON HARTWELL [#66139], 56, of Hollywood was suspended for three years, stayed, actually suspended for one year and until he makes restitution and the State Bar Court grants a motion to terminate the suspension, and was ordered to comply with rule 955. If the actual suspension exceeds two years, he must prove his rehabilitation. The order took effect Feb. 12, 2005. In a default proceeding, the bar court found that Hartwell did not comply with probation conditions attached to a 2002 disciplinary order. He did not file the final quarterly report, proof that he made restitution or proof that he passed the MPRE.The underlying discipline resulted from Hartwell’s conviction for felony vandalism. He caused about $16,000 in damage to a neighbor’s apartment after he broke a window and entered their apartment because he believed he heard voices asking for help.June 16, 2002 LESLIE LAYTON HARTWELL [#66139], 53, of Duarte was suspended for six months, stayed, placed on 18 months of probation with an actual 30-day suspension and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year. Credit towards the actual suspension will be given for a period of interim suspension which began June 27, 2001. The order took effect June 16, 2002. Hartwell pleaded no contest to felony vandalism in 1999. According to a stipulation he reached with the bar, he believed he heard two voices in the neighbors' walls asking for help. He broke a window to enter their apartment and began breaking through walls and pulling out cabinets to try to "rescue" them, causing about $16,000 in damage. In mitigation Hartwell has no prior record of discipline since his 1975 admission to the bar, no clients were harmed and his behavior was caused by undiagnosed bipolar disorder for which he now receives treatment. He also was under severe stress at the time.June 27, 2001 LESLIE LAYTON HARTWELL [#66139], 52, of Duarte was placed on interim suspension June 27, 2001, following a felony conviction of vandalism. He was ordered to comply with rule 955. |
