He also failed to contact the Office of Probation within 30 days after the effective date of discipline to schedule a meeting, meet with his probation deputy as scheduled or submit two quarterly reports on time. LEON ARAKELIAN [#243180], 38, of Pasadena was suspended for three years, stayed, placed on three years’ probation with an actual two-year suspension and until he provides proof of his rehabilitation and makes restitution. The order took effect Feb. 6, 2014.

The State Bar Court found Arakelian culpable of 13 counts of misconduct including committing an act of moral turpitude, engaging in the unauthorized practice of law and failure to perform with competence, respond to client inquiries, refund unearned fees, render accounts of client funds, or cooperate in a State Bar investigation. Arakelian’s misconduct involved three client matters.

In one matter, Arakelian was hired by a medical marijuana dispensary operator to help him form a corporation including filing the necessary incorporation documents with the State of California and obtaining a federal taxpayer identification number. Arakelian failed to complete any of the tasks, despite a number of requests by the client and complaints. Arakelian also failed to promptly respond to his client’s request for status updates, did not give the client an accounting for the time he spent on his matter and did not refund unearned fees.

In another matter, Arakelian appeared on behalf of a client in a traffic case in 2012 when he was ineligible to practice law due to having his default entered in another disciplinary action.

In a third matter, a man and his wife hired Arakelian in 2010 to handle their bankruptcy. Arakelian did not file their bankruptcy petition, and the client tried for nearly a year to contact him with no success. In October 2011, the man went to Arakelian’s office only to find it empty. Ultimately, the man fired Arakelian via text message, but Arakelian did not provide him with an accounting or return the portion of his retainer that was unearned.
