May 29, 2015 CHAKA H. GROSSMAN [#239941], 41, of Beverly Hills, was placed on two years’ probation and faces a two-year suspension if he does not comply with the terms of his disciplinary probation. He was also ordered to take the MPRE. The order took effect May 29, 2015. In January 2014, Grossman failed to appear at a probation violation hearing on a client’s behalf. When the hearing was continued twice over the next two days, Grossman failed to show up. The matter was continued again and Grossman again did not show up. An order-to-show-cause hearing was held on Feb. 14, 2014 and Grossman was again not present. An hour before the hearing, the court was informed that another attorney would be appearing on Grossman’s behalf but no one showed up. The judge then issued a second order to show cause. Grossman showed up an hour late for that hearing and the judge issued $1,500 in sanctions against him.He did not report the sanctions to the State Bar and did not respond to a State Bar investigator’s letters inquiring about the allegations against him. Grossman paid the sanctions belatedly. In mitigation, he had no prior record of discipline in many years of practicing law, entered into a prefiling stipulation with the State Bar and presented evidence of his good character and pro bono activities. |
