August 18, 2012 PATRICIA ANN GREGORY [#], 62, of Carlsbad was disbarred Aug. 18, 2012, and was ordered to comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court. A three-judge State Bar Court review panel upheld a hearing judge’s findings that Gregory misappropriated more than $112,000 from two clients. She appealed a hearing judge’s recommendation that she be disbarred and make restitution of more than $100,000 to two clients. She denied misappropriating any funds, saying they were earned and properly collected as fees.In one matter, she received $188,325 from the sale of her divorce client’s home, but withdrew more than $85,000 for personal expenses and allowed the balance in her trust account to drop to $239. In the second case, the court found she failed to maintain client funds in trust and committed acts of moral turpitude.Gregory also pleaded guilty in January 2012 in San Diego superior court to felony embezzlement and advertising her legal services without a license, a misdemeanor. She initially was charged with 11 felonies, including fraud and grand theft, for allegedly stealing from her clients. Eight charges were dropped and two were reduced to misdemeanors. She was sentenced in February to one year in jail and five years of probation.
