OWEN RIKI ONOUYE, 53, of Los Angeles was suspended for one year, stayed, placed on two years of probation with a one-year actual suspension and he was ordered to take the MPRE and comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court. If the actual suspension exceeds two years, he must prove his rehabilitation. He receives credit for a period of interim suspension that began Aug. 26, 2011. The order took effect June 21, 2012.

Onouye was convicted in Nebraska of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (48 pounds of marijuana). He was sentenced to between five and 10 years in prison and served two and one half years in a Nebraska state penitentiary.

In mitigation, he had no prior discipline record, cooperated with the bar’s investigation, was active in his community and had severe financial problems.
