Do pleaded no contest to oral copulation with a minor under 18, a felony involving moral turpitude. The victim was his niece, who as a senior in high school came from Hawaii to live with Do, his mother and brother, in order to establish residency to be eligible for reduced tuition at a California college. Do was in his late 30s and his niece was 17.Their relationship continued for several years and Do contends there was only one incident of oral sex prior to the girl's 18th birthday. The niece reported the relationship to police a year after it ended.Do was placed on five years of probation and spent six months in a work furlough facility which he could leave to go to work and to go home for 12 hours on the weekend. In mitigation, Do has no record of discipline, he is remorseful and he cooperated with the bar's investigation.April 16, 2001 MICHAEL HOANG DO [#154567], 42, of San Jose was placed on interim suspension April 16, 2001, following a conviction of committing a lewd act on a child under 18.
