September 20, 2012 ANGELA KAY WEST, 51, of Chicago was disbarred Sept. 20, 2012, and was ordered to comply with rule 9.20 of the California Rules of Court. West did not participate in disciplinary proceedings against her after she was convicted of battery against a police officer and drawing a deadly weapon other than a firearm in a threatening manner, both misdemeanors. Under rule 5.85 of the bar’s Rules of Procedure, she was disbarred for failing to act within 180 days to have the default set aside. She has no prior discipline record and the Client Security Fund has paid no claims against her.The bar court found that West’s conviction did not involve moral turpitude but warranted discipline. The conviction was the result of an altercation between West and police at an airport food court. She picked up a dust pan and began to swing it at customers, brandished a metal pipe and threatened to throw a glass bottle at security officers. She repeatedly yelled at airport security, “You’re not the police. I am a lesbian and you cannot have sex with me.†West was arrested and taken to the hospital, where she was placed on a 72-hour mental evaluation hold. |
