Discipline Summaries

June 21, 2012

MITCHELL BRUCE YOUNG, 54, of San Pedro was suspended for one year, stayed, placed on two years of probation with a 30-day actual suspension and he was ordered to take the MPRE. The order took effect June 21, 2012.

Young stipulated that in a personal injury case, he made false statements to his client and the court, committing acts of moral turpitude, and he failed to keep his client informed of significant developments in his case.

Appearing at a final status conference, Young falsely told the court that his client had accepted the defendants’ settlement offer. As a result, the court vacated a trial date. Young told his client the case was set for trial and they needed to meet. The client learned the truth and hired a new lawyer, who moved to set aside the dismissal. Young signed a declaration admitting that he did not have authority to accept the settlement on his behalf and that his actions led to the dismissal of the case. He reimbursed the client $1,755.

Young was privately reproved in 2001. In mitigation, he demonstrated remorse.
