Discipline Summaries

November 28, 2013

MICHAEL KING GROVES [#110645], 61, of Rancho Mirage was suspended for one year, stayed, placed on one year of probation and ordered to take the MPRE. The order took effect Nov. 28, 2013.

Groves stipulated to misconduct in one client matter in 2012. Groves took $4,000 in advanced fees from a couple for loan modification services related to two properties in violation of state law. He later refunded the money.

In mitigation, Groves entered into a pre-filing stipulation with the State Bar and has volunteered with a number of charitable organizations.

He had one prior record of discipline: a public reproval for failing to obtain informed consent in writing to representation of clients whose interests conflicted and for entering into an agreement to represent adverse interests without adequate disclosure. The misconduct arose from Groves’ drafting of a general partnership agreement.
