January 1, 1998 MARTIN S. PURVIN [#108557], 49, of Beverly Hills was disbarred Jan. 1, 1998. Purvin pleaded no contest in 1993 to failing to register with the state corporations commissioner a security involving the sale of coffee futures. His action involved the solicitation of a $6,000 investment. As a result of the conviction, Purvin was placed on disciplinary probation for 27 months with an actual two-year suspension. In this default case, the evidence showed that Purvin failed to file six quarterly probation reports, including compliance with his criminal probation.November 17, 1996 The previously ordered probation of MARTIN STUART PURVIN [#108557], 48, of Beverly Hills was extended for two years, effective Nov. 17, 1996. Purvin's probation was extended after he failed to comply with conditions attached to a 1994 disciplinary order. At that time, Purvin received a 27-month stayed suspension and 27 months of probation, including two years of actual suspension. He failed to file two required quarterly probation reports. The 1994 disciplinary order was issued after Purvin pleaded no contest in 1993 to a misdemeanor charge of selling securities without permission. At that time he stipulated that he engaged in acts of moral turpitude with respect to financial transactions with two acquaintances. Purvin borrowed money from them to invest in coffee and promised to return their investment in a short period of time. The hearing department of the State Bar Court found that Purvin's failure to comply with probation conditions, after agreeing to do so in a conversation with a bar deputy trial counsel, demonstrated an indifference toward his misconduct. |
